Abstract:

Analytical solutions to Maxwell-Bloch equations for a set of functions with a compact support are used to study physical mechanisms responsible for optical pulse distortion in an extended weakly-nonlinear resonance-absorbing gaseous medium. The pulse duration is assumed to be longer than the phase memory time. Coherent transient processes are shown to make a great contribution to the distortion of finite pulses even under quasi-stationary interactions, changing pulse shape and duration and resulting in phase modulation and a weaker absorption of the pulse energy.
