Abstract:

A simple classification and examples of atmospheric-optical events are given. The problem of lidar detection of the events is formalized mathematically as an optimum test of statistical hypotheses. Lidar signal processing algorithms are synthesized within the framework of monitoring atmospheric pollutions. Three versions of such a procedure are discussed: detection of temporal temperature extrema using rotational spontaneous Raman scattering of N2 and O2; identification of aerosol layers using elastic scattering; indication of an anomalous gas concentration using vibrational spontaneous Raman scattering for the gas of interest. Potential characteristics of lidar sensors intended for indicating unsafe CO concentrations in the air near busy highways are considered.
