Abstract:

The paper presents a short excursus in the history of the advent of lasers and the development of laser technologies as applied to the problem of remote laser sensing of the atmosphere. The paper describes prerequisites of the establishment of the Institute of Atmospheric Optics SB RAS and its role in the investigation of physical processes in the laser radiation propagation in the environment on the whole and in the development of laser sensing methodology, in particular. Using the problem of laser sensing of atmospheric aerosol as an example, a priority role of IAO specialists is shown in the development of effective methods and means for prompt optical control for the environment parameters. The most characteristic results are presented, which show the modern ten-dencies of introducing the advanced laser technology, including femtosecond lasers, in the promising devices and techniques of lidar sensing.
