Abstract:

This paper, based on the report at XVI International Symposium "Atmospheric and Oceanic Optics. Physics of Atmosphere" (Tomsk, October 2009), is devoted to 50th anniversary of the laser invention. It gives a flashback to the discovery of laser light filamentation and presents physical picture and state-of-the-art of this phenomenon. Main attention is given to atmospheric optics of filamentation, problems of control and application of filamentation of high-power femtosecond laser pulses.

Keywords:

femtosecond filament, muiltifilamentation, filamentation in aerosol, control of filamentation in turbulent atmosphere
