Abstract:

Results of lidar observations of stratospheric warming events in winter of 2008-2010 are presented. Observations cover the phases of the development and decay of the warming events. In winter of 2008/09, one strong warming event was recorded in the upper stratosphere with maximum temperature deviation from its monthly average up to 60 K on January 21-22. Major warming was observed from January 23 till January 28, 2010. At some nights, the temperature in the stratopause reached +30°C, and the tropopause height decreased down to 37-38 km. In February, the degree of warming gradually decreased, and its region was localized below 40 km. The stratopause height reached recordly low values of 23-25 km. In April, the vertical temperature profile was well described by the CIRA-86 model.
