Abstract:

Laser intensity fluctuations in snowfall over a 130 m atmospheric path were measured for a varying beam focusing parameter. The dependence of the fluctuation variance on the focusing parameter was found to be very changeable and determined by the relative contribution of the atmospheric turbulence and precipitation to the laser intensity. The effect of the precipitation on the fluctuations was measured to be negligible for a laser beam whose focus is at the detector plane.
