Abstract:

A statistical post-photomixer signal and noise model for a heterodyne Doppler Lidar is reported. It is shown that the signal component of photocurrent due to laser backscattering by atmospheric aerosol can be described by a gaussian narrowband random process. The signal component correlation function is found. The noise is assumed to be white. The shot noise and that induced by the "heterodyning"of the background radiation are taken into account. An expression for the maximum relative error of the wind velocity measurement is derived. Model calculations of the signal-to-noise ratio and the measurement error as a function of altitude for a ground-based lidar and a spaceborne laser radar in a 300 km orbit are presented.
