Numerical estimation of the theoretical response of the gas filter instrument for measurements of the total column amount of SO2 in the atmosphere has been made. The sensitivity of the gas filter instrument for measurements of the SO2 total column, using direct solar radiation in IR and UF spectral regions has been investigated. The effect of interfering species has been analysed. The technique to reduce the effect of ozone interfering has been developed. The results of the computations show the possibility of using the passive optical gas filter method for remote sounding of the total atmospheric column of SO2 in the unpolluted atmosphere. The maximal error, caused by species interference, is less than 30%.
