Abstract:

Data of numerical simulation are used to explore the capability of IR monitoring of aerosol and cirrus clouds from space for the purposes of atmospheric correction of satellite images of the Earth's surface under conditions of the turbid atmosphere. Three types of the optical situations are considered: aerosol of the near-ground layer, stratospheric volcanic aerosol, and cirrus clouds. We estimated the sensitivity of numerical simulation results to errors of specifying the optical depth, single scattering albedo, as well as aerosol or cloud scattering phase function. We separated the spectral characteristics, which help to classify different optical situations with a subsequent retrieval of optical depth.
