The possibility of restoring the cross-sectional energy density distribution of a laser beam from the air pressure measurements in a divergent sound wave produced by a laser pulse in the atmosphere is discussed taking into account the gradual transfer of the absorbed radiation energy into heat and kinetic cooling. Some results of the experiments conducted with CO2 -laser radiation in the atmosphere are presented.
