Abstract:

The role of the temperature dependence of the ozone absorption cross-section in the spaceborne diagnostics of the Earth's ozonosphere by the backscattering method was studied. Examples of different reference states of the terrestrial ozonosphere and atmosphere are considered to show that the neglect of the temperature effect in the 270-340 nm spectral region can lead to dramatic errors in calculating the backscattered UV solar radiation, thereby precluding adequate retrieval of the O3 total content and vertical distribution. Approximate mathematical procedures taking into account the variation of the ozone absorption cross-section with temperature are proposed.
