Abstract:

Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at pulse light sensing of objects in a turbid medium is theoretically studied in accordance with primary optical charac-teristics, receiver-transmitter parameters, noise type and external background. The calculations are made within the scope of the small-angle diffusion approximation, allowing for temporal broadening of light pulses in the turbid medium. The contributions of different noise and its effect on SNR d are found as a function of distance. At the real pulse power degradation of d is shown to be due to the decrease of energy transfer ratio, and at a considera-bly high power - to the decrease of recorded contrast. In the former case, d is strongly dependent on the single scattering albedo, and in the latter case it is strongly dependent on the phase function asymmetry. Simple formulas useful for practical calculations of d are derived for extreme cases of small and large distances.
