Abstract:

Comprehensive field investigations of variability and correlation of optical and electrical characteristics of the near-ground atmosphere in winter are carried out. It is shown that, according to the set of parameters, the dense winter hazes observed over cities under calm conditions can be identified as the urban winter smog. Comparative analysis of the temporal variability of the aerosol extinction coefficient and the strength of electric field in winter has show that atmospheric electricity affects the optical properties of the atmosphere through the diffuse mechanism of charge. It is supposed that increase of the strength of electric field in winter hazes under calm conditions can be a predictor of smog formation.
