Abstract:

Time series of concentrations of some trace gases in Moscow and Kirov Regions, Kiev and Crimea under conditions of the anomalous hot summer of 2010 were analyzed. During July-August, 2010, concentrations of ozone, particulate matter (PM10), carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides in the Moscow Region almost continuously exceeded national ambient air quality standards. The most pollution was observed in August 2-11, when some vast plumes of fires of forests and peatbogs covered the region. Pollutant concentrations, at the first place, ozone, exceeded ones observed in the West Europe during heat wave of 2003. They influenced on the citizen health increasing mortality and morbidity, firstly, due to high concentrations of PM10 and ozone. Air quality in the Kirov Region, Kiev and Crimea, which weren't covered by fire plumes, was quite satisfactory although their weather conditions were similar to Moscow ones.
