Abstract:

A strict approach, based on the use of the tensor Green function, to solution of the Maxwell equations for the monochromatic field in a homogeneous uniaxial medium is considered. A general solution is presented satisfying arbitrarily specified boundary conditions. Requirements for boundary conditions are formulated, which provide for field existence in a uniaxial medium either in the form of only ordinary or only extraordinary wave. The results allow decomposition of arbitrarily specified boundary conditions, i.e., their representation in the form of only possible combination of two components, each of which is responsible for propagation of waves of only one type. An approximated decomposition of boundary conditions, applicable for paraxial beams, is suggested.
